    Browlift

    Introduction

A forehead lift or “browlift” is a procedure that restores a more youthful, refreshed look to the area above the eyes. A browlift is an important part of eyelid and upper face reconstructive surgery. A browlift effectively repositions the eyebrows, and smoothes the forehead to address one of the very first signs of aging, the lengthening of the forehead and drooping of the eyebrows. Sun, wind, squinting and the pull of gravity all affect the face resulting in frown lines, wrinkling across the forehead, and an increasing heaviness of the eyebrows. This procedure can create a more youthful, awake and alert appearance.

A browlift is quite often performed in conjunction with a face-lift to provide a more harmonious and balanced overall look to the face.

Am I suitable candidate for this cosmetic surgery?
The best candidate for a browlift is between the ages of 40-60 years, the procedure minimises the visible effects of aging, and gives a brightening effect making the upper face area more alert and refreshed. However, it is also suitable for people of any age who have developed furrows or frown lines due to muscle activity or inherited conditions. Suitable candidates for this cosmetic surgery have dense hair, non skin damaged skin, and symmetry of the face and brows. Bald or patients with a receding hairline, or who have had previous upper-eyelid surgery may still be candidates for browlift, however there may be limitations and or alterations in the procedure. Patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, or a tendency to form excessive scars may have slight differences in facial and brow symmetry, yet these are normally non noticeable. If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of cosmetic surgery.

Are there different types of Browlifts?
There are two methods of achieving a brow or forehead lift: the classic or “open” method, or the Endoscopic forehead lift, the best method for you will be discussed at the consultation. The open method is a more invasive cosmetic surgery, and Dr. Solomos has adopted the more minimally invasive Endoscopic (an instrument that has a probe on the end that transmits images from inside the body to a TV screen) browlift technique, which requires much smaller incisions for the majority of patients. You can achieve both a lift to the brow and a smoothing out effect of the skin of the forehead with the use of botulinum toxin (Botox), however you do need to have this repeated every three months, and in situations where the brow has dropped significantly, then Botox alone will not be enough to achieve a lifted look. A browlift is usually performed with a full general anaesthetic and takes about 45 minutes to perform, it can be done as a day case procedure or as an overnight stay. Bandages and drains are removed before discharge, and the hair will be carefully washed so the patient can return home with full postoperative care instructions. Following this cosmetic surgery, patients experience swelling and bruising of the forehead, eyes, and face to varying degrees, which can last up to 3 weeks. Patients also experience a feeling of numbness and tension in the forehead and scalp areas. A slight scar will form at the incision sites, this is red and slightly lumpy in the first few months following cosmetic surgery, yet as these aren’t readily seen as hidden in the hair. Patients experience a tight feeling around the forehead following surgery as a result of the bandages used, however the majority of patients experience a surprisingly small amount of discomfort following a browlift.

Can I combine a browlift with other plastic surgery procedures?

How long before I can get back to normal?
Patients will be back to normal in a few days yet should rest and be gentle with the face and hair, since the skin may be both tender and numb, and may not respond normally at first. Patients should avoid strenuous activity, yet mild stretching and walking are fine. At the beginning the face may feel unusual from the swelling, and facial movements may be slightly stiff. Most patients are back at work from about ten days to two weeks after cosmetic surgery, camouflage makeup can mask most remaining bruising.
